CES: Why we interview who we interview

Jan 13, 2026

After every CES or NAB I get emails asking why we interviewed this vendor or that, and why we didn’t interview others.

The answers are pretty much the same each year:

  • We don’t chase what is or might be the “hot things” for that year. If we happen to find them, great. There are plenty of products that deserve attention that don’t get it, especially when they represent a very specific use case.
  • The pre-show press releases, announcements, and information provided on the CES web site all provide a starting place for who is going to be at the show and what they will be announcing that looks interesting.
  • There are some vendors we visit year after year because they consistently deliver new, interesting, and reliable products. Those visits often turn into a unique friendship where we spend 10 or 15 minutes with them each year, and are disappointed if they skip a year exhibiting.
  • Exhibitors or products that don’t fit, even remotely, in the MacVoices wheelhouse but that are of interest to use for personal reasons.
  • The inevitable “fly-bys” where we see a booth banner that catches our interest. Those are often some of the best finds.
  • We do our best to include any products or vendors that MacVoices viewers or listeners ask us to check out.

As you watch this year’s coverage, I’ll let you guess which category applies to which vendor. Be assured that there is a good reason for each one.
